June 6th: Today's Feature - Mavis Best; Scrap S.U.S. Campaigner
Mavis Best, a courageous young Black mother from Lewisham in Southeast London, took it upon herself to challenge the police and rescue the detained boys. When she confronted the police about the wrongful detention of children, she was met with threats of her own arrest. Undeterred, Mrs. Best fearlessly responded, "Arrest me then!" Her unwavering determination and refusal to back down in the face of intimidation made her a true hero.

Born Lilian Bailey on February 18, 1918, Lilian Bader made history as one of the pioneering Black women to enlist in the British armed forces. Her legacy is marked by her courage, determination, and trailblazing spirit, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women of colour in the military.

June 4th: Today’s Feature - Justin Fashanu; Footballer
Justin Soni Fashanu, commonly known as Justin Fashanu, was born on February 19, 1961. He was born to a Nigerian barrister who resided in the United Kingdom and a Guyanese nurse named Pearl. Unfortunately, due to their parents' separation, Justin and his younger brother John Fashanu were placed in a Barnardo's children's home.

June 3rd: Today's Feature - John Richard Archer; Politician and Activist
John Richard Archer, born in 1863 and passed away in 1932, was a prominent British politician and activist. He made history in 1913 by becoming the first black mayor of a London borough, specifically Battersea. Archer was recognised for his Pan-Africanist beliefs and served as the inaugural president of the African Progress Union.

From 1972 to 1976, Joan Armatrading participated in eight sessions for the John Peel show, marking a significant period in her career. May 30th: Today's Feature - Diane Abbott, Member of Parliament (MP)
Raised in Paddington by a British-Jamaican family, Diane Abbott attended Harrow County School for Girls and pursued a Masters degree in History at Newnham College, Cambridge. She worked in the Civil Service, as a reporter for Thames Television and TV-am, and as a press officer for the Greater London Council. Joining the Labour Party, she was elected to Westminster City Council in 1982 and then as an MP in 1987, winning re-election in subsequent general elections.
